Message from the President

Gerri Barclay, President of Oakland NOWRecently, my brother asked me to write an autobiographical piece for a time-capsule which he is burying  to be opened in one hundred years.  While  writing, I reflected on how much has changed since I joined NOW thirty years ago to bring women ...into full participation in the mainstream of American society exercising all privileges and responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with men, and how much has remained the same.

There has certainly been progress, but it appears to me that we are fighting many of the same battles for decades.  Along with  other activists, I received a letter from Mandy Hagseth, who lives in Canton, South Dakota.  She and many others are fighting the proposed abortion ban which threatens to take choice from the women of South Dakota.   The women are staging pot-lucks to raise money to fight the radical right which is, as Ms. Hagseth says, trying to use (my) state as the launching pad for their assault on Roe v. Wade.  I remember when we had bake sales to raise money in our fight for the Equal Rights Amendment.

I thought those days were over;  they are not. Please consider sending money to the Planned Parenthood Federation of Minnesota, North and South Dakota to aid Ms. Hagseth, and her compatriots, in their struggle to save Roe and preserve their constitutional right to an abortion.

Proposal 2, the so-called Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, will be on the ballot November 7th and  should have resolved long ago.  Please vote NO! on Proposal 2 because it would end affirmative action in Michigan.  Affirmative action programs help establish equal opportunity for women and minorities. They redress past gender, racial and ethnic discrimination, and encourage diversity in educational institutions and workplaces.  Despite the progress that has been made over the last three decades, equal opportunity in the workplace and in education remains an unrealized goal.  Affirmative action ensures that women and minorities have equal access to quality education at all levels and provides opportunities for women to enter non-traditional occupations.  Remember, vote NO on Proposal 2!  It is neither civil nor right.
